Broad Institute
CHALLENGE
The Broad Institute is one of the world's leading genomic medicine research facilities.
It was founded as collaboration between MIT and Harvard, and funded by philanthropists
Eli and Edythe L. Broad. The Broads' original founding donation was "experimental" in
nature, but with the Institute's early and consistent success the Broads decided to
make it a permanent institution with a record-breaking endowment. For this historic
announcement, the institute needed to stage a press event and present a video that told
the unique story of "the Broad", and to also act as a tribute and "thank you" to
the Broads themselves.
SOLUTION
Patterned after the documentary style of award-winning filmmaker Errol Morris, the Broad
video was simple in its creativity. The Broad story was told through intimate,
face-to-face on-camera interviews with dozens of Broad scientists, supporters and
employees — each revealing their passion and personality. Many days of shooting,
from Cambridge to New York and LA was required to accommodate all the scientists and
"friends of the Broad" across the country. The video tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Broad
and their namesake institution was personal, inspiring, passionate and fun —
similar to the experience of visiting or working at the Broad Institute. Blue Wave
also staged and produced the press event, coordinating live press record feeds, lighting
and staging, live music, banner production and all audio/video presentation equipment.
The video debuted at the press event and was appropriately re-edited for a more
"evergreen" version for the Broad website.
